Kidney Stone Diet: 10 Top Tips

There are many treatments for the painful condition known as kidney stones, which occurs when minerals and other substances build up in the urinary tract. In many cases, by changing your diet you can help to naturally dissolve your kidney stones. The kidneys are the organ that cleans the blood and detoxifies the whole body, so your diet is especially important for this organ. Here are ten tips to help you pass your kidney stones and prevent them from recurring.

  1. Increase Consumption of Water
This is very important if you want to get rid of kidney stones. Water dilutes toxins and allows them to exit your body with the urine. Drink at least two quarts of water every day, best if filtered.
  2. Reduce Sugar, Caffeine and Alcohol
All of these are irritating to the kidneys. Also avoid artificial sweeteners like aspartame. Try to get your sweeteners in natural form, like honey and fresh fruit.
  3. Take this Tonic Twice Daily
Mix 1/4 cup of fresh lemon or organic lemon juice with 1/4 cup of cold-pressed olive oil and drink, followed by eight ounces of water. This is a very effective kidney stone treatment.
  4. Get Regular Exercise
Exercise is important as well. You release toxins by sweating and breathing more deeply, which occur when you get vigorous exercise. Find something that you like, whether its fast walking, running, hiking, racket sports, swimming or biking. Stationary machines are good as well.
  5. Reduce These Oxalate-rich Foods
Certain foods, known as oxalates, can be irritating to the urinary tract. In fact, kidney stones are often made partly of oxalates. Research shows that certain oxalate rich foods such as spinach, chocolate, nuts, rhubarb, beets and tea should be reduced when you have kidney stones.
  6. Eat Moderate Amounts of Protein, Calcium and Sodium
You don’t have to avoid these foods -in fact, you need protein and calcium, but don’t eat large quantities of high protein foods or consume extra calcium in the form of supplements or calcium-based antacids. Dairy products are okay in moderation, preferably organic. Your sodium intake should be moderate, and try to get pure sea salt instead of regular table salt.
  7. Eat or Drink Melons
Melons, especially watermelon, is a great tonic for the kidneys. Cantaloupe and other melons are good as well.
  8. Drink Herbal Teas
Since you want to cut down on caffeine with kidney stones, you might try decaffeinated green tea. Herbal teas can also be good -detoxifiers and diuretics like dandelion, cleavers, couch grass and buchu can be helpful.
  9. Meditate or Visualize
The mind has a powerful effect on the body. If you take even ten minutes per day and relax, breathe deeply and imagine healing energy going through your body, focused especially in the kidney area, you will be helping to heal yourself. It’s good to do this twice per day if possible, such as early in the morning and before going to sleep.
  10. Cook With Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils you can ingest. It provides high levels of healthy fat, which is good for your whole body. It is an excellent accompaniment to a kidney stone diet as well.
